New Flashing Yellow Traffic Lights

To improve traffic flow and aid in accident prevention, several new flashing yellow traffic lights have been added at intersections throughout the City. The new left turn signal technology, called “flashing yellow arrow”, incorporates the usual green/yellow/red signal indication colors that motorists recognize on standard traffic signals. Additionally, the flashing yellow arrow indicates that left turns are permitted but must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

YellowFlashingLightsA study released in 2007 (National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report 493)for the Federal Highway Administration indicated that the flashing yellow arrow helped reduce crashes, improved left turn efficiency, and provided additional traffic management flexibility.

Flashing yellow lights are now in operation at the following City intersections:

  • SR66 at SR448 NB only
  • Parkway at East Main Street, eastbound and westbound
  • SR66 at West Main Street, westbound
  • Forks of River Blvd at Bruce Street, southbound
  • Parkway/Prince/Park, northbound
  • Parkway at Hicks, northbound and southbound
  • Parkway at South Boulevard, northbound and southbound
  • Parkway at Park/Cate, northbound and southbound.
