Two Persons Arrested on Multiple Drug Charges

Posted 08-10-18.

At approximately 8:00pm Wednesday evening, August 8, the Sevierville Police Department responded to a complaint regarding illegally parked cars in front of 301 Sevier Street. Upon arrival, SPD Officer Paul Laymon observed two illegally parked vehicles, a Subaru passenger vehicle and a box truck. Officer Laymon proceeded to knock on the front door of the residence, and when it was opened by a person inside, he observed what appeared to be marijuana inside the house.

While Officer Laymon was in the process of arresting the two individuals inside the home, he also observed what appeared to be other drugs in the house.

A search warrant was obtained for the residence and vehicles and executed this morning, Thursday, August 9. Out of an abundance of caution, a hazmat team comprised of Sevier County Emergency Management Agency personnel and SPD officers searched the home. No hazardous materials were found, however they did come upon a suspicious device that looked like a possible pipe bomb.

Members of the Sevier County Interagency Hazardous Devices Unit retrieved the suspicious device and subsequently determined it was not a functioning explosive device. The Hazardous Devices Unit is comprised of officers from the Gatlinburg Police Department, Pigeon Forge Police Department, SCSO and SPD.

The two persons arrested were 26-year old Darrell L. Smith of Sevierville and 30-year old Lance A. Mitchell of Knoxville. Both individuals were charged with the following:

Three counts each possession for resale of a Schedule I drug (LSD, ecstasy, psilocybin mushrooms);
One count each possession for resale of a Schedule II drug (cocaine);
One count each possession for resale of a Schedule IV drug (phentermine); and
One count each possession for resale of a Schedule VI. Drug (marijuana).
Mr. Smith was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, Sevierville Fire Department, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and an ATF Task Force Officer assigned to the SCSO also responded and provided assistance.

All persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
