Beautification Efforts at I-40 Exit 407

In an effort to improve the appearance of Highway 66 at Interstate 40 Exit 407, the Sevierville Parks and Recreation Department recently planted forty-two new trees in several green spaces. Three species were planted - Crape Myrtles, Red Maples and Sugar Maples. Portable water devices were installed for each tree to ensure growth and maturation during extreme hot and dry periods. The new trees are located in the green spaces on the north and south side of the diverging diamond interchange on Highway 66.

The beautification project was a collaborative effort between the City (Public Works and Parks & Recreation), Tennessee Department of Agriculture, and the Sevierville Trees/Trails Beautification Board. The City utilized employees to perform the planting so that the entire $7,500.00 (seven-thousand five-hundred) budget could be used for trees and planting materials. The Tennessee Division of Forestry provided a $2,845.00 (two-thousand eight-hundred and forty-five) grant; the City and the Trees/Trails and Beautification Board provided the remaining $4,665.00 (four-thousand sixty-five).

"This project was the result of public and private funding coming together to improve the appearance of the most heavily used interstate exit and highway in Sevier County," said Bob Parker, Director of Parks and Recreation. "We are hopeful that the new trees will add some wonderful color this coming spring."

As part of the grant requirements, all of the trees planted had to be grown in Tennessee and meet very rigid standards. All of trees were grown in McMinnville, Tennessee and were planted with new soil. Twenty Crape Myrtles, eleven Red Maples and eleven Sugar Maples were planted.
