The Street Division of the Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining City streets, bridges and Right of Ways. By doing this we patch potholes, make full-depth asphalt repairs, pick up litter, mow and weed eat Right of ways, install and improved drainage systems, sweep all streets (both local and TDOT ROW) and a variety of other tasks. We also take care of snow and ice removal and clean up other debris after storms. We administer the five-year paving and sidewalk plans. We also assist other City Departments with specialized equipment (Backhoes, dump trucks or paving, etc.). In addition to the traditional aspects of a street department, we have also been given the responsibility of mowing and weed-eating selected portions of the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River and Middle Creek riverbanks as a part of the TVA river re-channelization project of the 1960s. This mowing generally takes place in the fall as the vegetation goes dormant.
