Police Alert Citizens to Bogus IRS Telephone Scam
The Sevierville Police Department (SPD) is issuing an alert to citizens regarding a fraudulent telephone scam.
The SPD has received complaints from residents wherein a person representing himself as an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent called and demanded payment of IRS fines, which are actually nonexistent. Some citizens have also reported that the person threatens to have the citizen arrested if they fail to immediately comply.
These calls are not being placed by legitimate IRS agents and citizens should not comply with this or similar demands for payment in any fashion.
Citizens are reminded to never provide sensitive personal or financial information over the phone, by email or the internet, or to comply with demands for payment, until they have confirmed the authenticity of the request.
